Hybrid Models

A growing number of journals are adopting 'hybrid models' where some of the papers are open access. This is seen by some publishers as a transition method from subscription-based access to open access

This paper describes a scheme by which current subscription-based journals can be transformed into open access journals. Under this plan, authors are given a choice as to whether or not they were willing and able to pay a publication charge. If they are (and, of course, the paper is judged acceptable for publication following peer-review) the paper is made open access on publication. If they are unwilling or unable to pay the paper is only made available to subscribers. Over time, the proportion of authors willing to pay should increase and the publisher can begin to reduce the subscription price. Eventually, the entire journal will be open access.
