The 2010 SPARC Europe Annual Meeting will be held during the LIBER annual conference in Aarhus, Denmark, on Tuesday 29th of June, consisting of:
- Welcome and introduction by Bas Savenije, Chair of SPARC Europe Board of Directors
- Presentation about the SPARC Europe strategy by our recently appointed Executive Director (Astrid van Wesenbeeck)
- A presentation by Wim van der Stelt entitled ‘Springer Open Choice’ to stress the Springer’s vision on Open Access and the role of Springer Open Choice on the road to Open Access. Wim will address in particular project pilots running at Dutch universities but also at the Universities of Gottingen, California and Hong Kong
- A presentation by Johan Bollen entitled ‘New ways to determine the impact of research publications’ aimed at providing us an insight of the MESUR project as an example of new ways that can help determine the impact of scholarly publications
- A panel discussion on how these developments can enhance the transition towards Open Access and the role SPARC Europe may play in this transition.

Early bird registration is open until Friday 30th of April (late registration closes on 14th of June). PLEASE NOTE that this year one day only registration is available for DKK 925, - (around EUR 125,-), including VAT, lunch and beverages.

Astrid van Wesenbeeck
Astrid will initially start working with SPARC Europe part-time from 15th of June and full‐time from 12th of July 2010. Members of SPARC Europe will have the opportunity to meet Astrid at the SPARC Europe Members Meeting in Aarhus, Denmark.
Wim van der Stelt
Wim started his professional career in 1987 at Wolters Kluwer Academic Book Shops in The Netherlands. From 1991 until 1996 he had several marketing positions at multiple publishing houses within the Netherlands. Wim moved to Kluwer Academic Publishers in 2001 to become Global Marketing Director and Vice President of Commercial Operations. In 2004, Kluwer merged with Springer Verlag and he became Executive Vice President of Business Development at Springer, taking responsibility for the Springer’s Open Access policies and strategy.
Johan Bollen
Johan is Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing. Previously, he was a Staff Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (2005-2009) and Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of Old Dominion University (2002 to 2005). He obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Brussels in 2001 on the subject of cognitive models of human hypertext navigation and since taught courses on Data Mining, Information Retrieval and Digital Libraries. His research has been funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, National Science Foundation, Library of Congress, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
His present research interests are usage data mining, complex networks, computational sociometrics, infometrics, and digital libraries. He has published extensively on these subjects as well as on issues relating to adaptive information systems. He is currently Principal Investigator of the MESUR project.
